9 Daily Dental Care Tips

Dental care is just as important as care for the rest of your body.  If your teeth and gums do not receive the proper level of dental care, your oral health will gradually decline. What people do not realize is that proper dental care does not take a large amount of effort.

The truth is that a few simple changes to one's oral health routine can continue to keep a set of teeth healthy. Here are a few simple dental care tips that you can incorporate into your oral health routine.

Do Everything Possible to Increase Saliva Production

Saliva is essential for combating bacteria. You can promote the production of saliva by drinking water, chewing sugar-free gum and consuming specific foods. In particular, sour foods like cranberries, cherries, limes and lemons are essential for saliva production.

Clean Your Teeth After Eating

While it may seem difficult, it is important to brush and floss after each meal. If it is difficult to bring a small toothbrush and toothpaste with you each day, you can also benefit from drinking water to help flush some of the bits of food off of the teeth. Certain sugar-free gum can also help. No matter what, at least try to floss and brush after your three daily meals so food particles and bacteria do not have a chance to compromise your oral health.

Get Into the Habit of Using Food to Clean Your Teeth

If you work or attend school, cleaning your teeth following each meal will prove difficult. If you cannot floss and brush your teeth at such a frequency, eat crunchy foods like apples and carrots. These nutritious fruits and vegetables are natural teeth-cleaners.

Consume Vitamin D and Calcium Every Single Day

Calcium is essential for sturdy teeth and bones. Fortunately, you can obtain calcium from nuts, soybeans, leafy greens like spinach and dairy products of all types. Consuming supplements to ensure the calcium is properly absorbed by your body. You can also obtain vitamin D from citrus fruits like grapefruit and oranges.

The daily consumption of calcium and Vitamin D will strengthen your teeth and reduce the chances of breaks, chips, fractures and other damage. Do not fall into the trap of forgetting the fact that your teeth are made of calcium. Even your gums are comprised of calcium. Fail to consume calcium and your oral health will slowly deteriorate.

Use Mouthwash

Rinse with mouthwash or water following each meal. While this practice might seem tedious, it will help destroy germs. Furthermore, rinsing with mouthwash will help mask the odor of onions, garlic and other odorous foods and spices.

Chew Sugarless Gum Instead of Indulging in Sugary Sweets

There is no sense chowing down on sugary delights to satisfy your sweet tooth when you can enjoy gum that hits the spot without sacrificing your oral health. If you absolutely have to consume sugar, be sure to brush your teeth about half an hour after. Try to limit your consumption to small amounts of the food and consider chewing a piece of sugarless gum immediately after. The combination of the two should satisfy your cravings without compromising the integrity of your teeth.
