Can Gum Disease be Treated by a Cosmetic Dentist?

Gum Disease Redwood City, CA

Cosmetic dentists are known to improve their patient’s smiles through cosmetic dental procedures. However, they also offer services that can improve oral health as well as improve how their patients look when smiling. This review discusses the various treatments a cosmetic dentist may offer to treat gum disease.

A review of gum disease treatment from a cosmetic dentist

The most common ways gum disease is treated by dentists include improvements in the patient’s oral hygiene routine, dental cleaning, scaling and root planing, gum contouring, and a gum graft procedure. Cosmetic dentists often offer some or all of these gum disease treatments.

Oral hygiene improvements

Dental treatment is not always needed to deal with gum disease, specifically when detected in the earliest stages. A mild case of gum disease can often improve and the symptoms can reside from improvements in the patient’s oral care routine, along with regular dental cleanings (see below). Therefore, cosmetic dentists often provide detailed instructions on how to care for their smile at home and prevent gum disease through regular brushing, flossing, and mouthwash use.

Dental cleaning

A routine dental cleaning involves removing plaque and tartar along the gum line and on the surface of teeth. This may be recommended by a cosmetic dentist to address the early signs of gum disease, but it is not ideal for a more severe case of gum disease. In addition, dental cleanings are recommended for preventive purposes as well, and they are encouraged several times a year.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing, also called a deep dental cleaning, is used primarily to treat a more severe case of gum disease that is known as periodontitis. This can lead to deeper gum pockets and affect the support of teeth. Scaling and root planing involves cleaning beneath the gum line to remove plaque and tartar accumulation, followed by smoothing the tooth roots to allow the gums to reattach.

Gum contouring

A gum contouring procedure is often offered by cosmetic dentists as a way to improve the appearance of the gums. This is primarily used for addressing a “gummy smile.” However, in some cases, it can also serve as an effective gum disease treatment by removing excess gum tissue that is diseased.

Gum graft procedure

A gum graft procedure may be an option if the patient experiences a more severe case of gum recession as a result of gum disease. This protects the tooth’s crown and can improve the appearance of the gums, especially if the gums appear to be diseased and receded due to a more severe or prolonged case of periodontitis.
